Description:
Bangladeshhas made notable progress in improving maternal and child health outcomes overthe past two decades. However, maternal undernutrition remains a significantpublic health challenge, contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes andperpetuating intergenerational cycles of malnutrition. Approximately one inthree women of reproductive age are underweight, and deficiencies in essentialmicronutrients, such as iron, zinc, folate, and vitamin A, remain widespread.These deficiencies increase the risk of low birth weight, preterm delivery, andmaternal complications, limiting progress toward national and global nutritiontargets.Despite high coverage of antenatal care (ANC), the quality andcomprehensiveness of maternal nutrition services remain limited. Nutritioncounseling, weight monitoring, and supplementation are inconsistentlydelivered, and operational challenges constrain integration of evidence-basednutrition interventions into primary health care.Evidence from global implementation shows that multiple micronutrientsupplementation (MMS) during pregnancy improves maternal nutritional status andbirth outcomes more effectively than single-nutrient supplementation.Recognizing this evidence, the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) has committed toscaling MMS as a key component of its maternal health and nutrition strategy.TheHealth, Nutrition and Population Sector Development Program (HNPSDP), supportedby the World Bank, seeks to strengthen Bangladesh-s health system andaccelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC). One of itsstrategic innovations is the integration and scale-up of MMS for pregnantwomen, positioning Bangladesh as a pioneer among low- and middle-incomecountries to mainstream MMS through a government-led program.Successful implementation will require addressing challenges related to policyalignment, institutional readiness, supply chain preparedness, capacitybuilding, and community awareness.
