Country: BangladeshDescription of the Assignment: The Constitution of the People-s Republic of Bangladesh provides for the protection of the human rights of all citizens. The right to life, liberty, to be treated equally before the law, and non-discrimination are fundamental human rights principles set out in the Constitution as a range of civil and political rights. Economic, social, and cultural rights are also guaranteed as a matter of state policy. In addition to these national commitments, Bangladesh is also a party to almost all of the core international human rights treaties. Against this backdrop, notable progress has been achieved in the promotion and protection of all human rights in recent years. Many statutory bodies are functioning as effective human rights watchdogs with greater authority and more independence than ever before. Social protection schemes have been extended to cover vulnerable and extremely poor groups of people. Scores of Legislation have been enacted in Parliament to prevent domestic violence and sexual harassment as well as for the prevention of torture in custody, to ensure access to legal aid for the poor and vulnerable justice seekers.
