- Tenders are invited for Bangladesh Power Sector Decarbonization Path Analysis . Bangladesh has huge challenges in ensuring the affordability; reliability; and carbon efficiency of electricity services. Despite Bangladesh government-s push for renewable energy development (targeting 15% of total generation from renewables by 2030 and 40% by 2040) and several project awards (2GW in pipeline); overall renewables development has been slow due to land scarcity for large scale solar PV and scarcity of wind or hyrdo resources to tap on. In August 2021; GoB updated its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) target of 6.73% unconditional reduction in GHG emissions by 2030; with an additional 15.12% reduction on the condition of receiving adequate finance and other means of support from developed countries. In COP26 event; the Prime Minister of Bangladesh announced the GoB-s decision to cancel 10 coal-based power plants with a planned combined capacity of 8.5 GW. This new strategy of GoB to reduce GHG emissions will put an end on the growth of coal power plants in the longer run but; in absence of identifying additional renewable energy resources; this will further increase the demand for gas/ LNG. As a result; a key issue is the growing importance that will be attached to low and no-carbon sources of power generation; and the complementing role that natural gas-fired power generation may play as Bangladesh shifts onto a power sector decarbonization path. A consultant is now sought to develop decarbonization path scenarios that will help to deepen understanding of the potential for renewables and the role of gas in Bangladesh-s power sector in terms of both meeting demand and managing CO2 emissions. A key part of the analysis will involve assessing the potential for large-scale and distributed solar; wind (including offshore wind); and batteries; and the specific role that new LNG terminals could play if needed; including proposed LNG terminals in both the southeast (where two FSRUs are currently operating) and the southwest (which today has no access to natural gas).
