Description:
ThePlastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) project, implemented bythe South Asia Co-operative Environment Program (SACEP) with support from theWorld Bank, addresses the urgent need for coordinated action against plasticpollution in South Asia. 1. Plastic pollution in South Asia is a transboundary challenge, withrivers carrying waste across borders and into the ocean, making nationalefforts alone insufficient. Regional cooperation is essential forharmonizing policies, sharing knowledge, and coordinating action amongcountries facing similar pressures from rising plastic consumption andmismanaged waste. By bringing together governments, industry, and civilsociety, the assignment proposed building a foundation for a standardizedregional action plan, enabling countries to identify hotspots collectively,align on solutions, and leverage public-private partnerships for greaterimpact. II. Sri Lanka faces ongoing challenges with plastic waste, as thecountry-s recycling rate remains low and industries often prefer cheaper virginplastics over recycled materials. The plastic value chain is characterized bylimited infrastructure and inconsistent quality standards, which makes itchallenging for recycled products to compete. III. Nepal-s plastic waste management system is still developing,especially for non-PET plastics like LDPE and multi-layer packaging. Much ofthis waste is not collected or recycled, leading to pollution in rivers thatflow downstream into neighbouring countries. Mapping the flow of problematicplastics and analyzing market barriers is crucial to guiding policy reforms andinfrastructure improvements. IV. Bangladesh has seen a rapid increase in plastic use, particularly inurban areas. While the government has set ambitious targets for recycling andreducing single-use plastics, the country-s waste management infrastructure isstruggling to keep up.
